Some scholars see this tendency toward the balance of separateness with oneness (or “all feeling”) in Clarel, Melville’s book-length poem. John T. Shawcross, for example, sees Clarel as coming “to represent the person, any person, who is capable of finding the godhead within himself” (71). Not eclipsing that interpretation, most readers also see Clarel as being left with incomprehension and an acceptance of a God who cannot be heard. Emerson’s writings suggest that God speaks in everything, but is revealed only in the harmony of the self with what is outside the self, a stipulation which also allows for God’s silence.
